When I was first learning to play the drums - I kept hearing about so-called "Drum Rudiments" and how important they were to improving my abilities on the drum kit. Unfortunately, I had no idea what they were, or why they what made them so important.
My first drum instructor showed me some of the basic rudiments, but they were always done on a practice pad - and I never felt they really applied to what I wanted to play. It was semi-interesting to learn them, but I preferred to learn more beats and drum fills during drum lessons.
It wasn't until a few years later that I began realizing the importance of drum rudiments, and that they truly were applicable in the many areas of drumming I was interested in. Needless to say, I then wished I had spent more time developing them early on - and more to the point - wished I had received better instruction on exactly how to apply them within my drumming.
Since that time - I have continued to grow as a drummer, and now teach 40+ students on a regular basis. Over the years I have developed a unique system for teaching AND (more importantly) applying the rudiments around the drum kit.

drum rudiment training system I developed...
Five Common Misconceptions
of Drum Rudiments
- They are for marching bands - This just isn't true. Although marching bands around the world teach drum rudiments - they are just as important for everyday drummers that want to improve their ability to play rock, jazz, latin or other styles of music.
- Rudiments aren't applicable today - Rudiments are one of the most important building blocks of modern drumming. To say that they are obsolete is to say that the drumstick is obsolete.
- I have to learn traditional grip - Not true. While playing in traditional grip is popular among marching drummers - it is by no means a requirement of playing drum rudiments.
- They are hard to play - Another misconception. With the right training and explanation/breakdown - anyone can learn to play all of the essential rudiments.
- They are boring and repetitive - While initial development on a practice pad requires some repetitive practice (yes, there is just no way around learning things right) - once you have mastered the basics - applying the rudiments on your drum kit will enable whole new levels of creativity. Virtually every rudiment can be applied in dozens of unique ways around even the smallest of drum sets.

I hope you are starting to understand just how important the drum rudiments are to everyday playing, and that learning them WILL drastically improve your skills. Far too many drummers don't have the information and insight to understand just how important they are, and thus you can already consider yourself a step ahead of the pack. Now's it's time to take that knowledge, and make the most of it.
